LMS began using these shunters in the 1930's and it was soon realised that the diesel shunter had a huge advantage over its steam counterpart. The diesel were ready to use as soon as they were required whereas the steam locos had to be left running in case they were needed. The shunter offered an easy alternative at a fraction of the cost with less staffing requirements and lower fuel costs
