Wills Kits SS56 Level Crossing Gates OO Gauge Plastic Kit

These distinctive gates were one of the many different types used whenever road and rail’s paths crossed. On the prototype the gates spent most of the time set across the tracks, but whenever the train was due, the gates were moved across the road in sufficient time to allow trains to pass through without delay. On a layout they can be left set against the road – not a problem because on a model railway there’s usually a train due very soon anyway. The task was the responsibility of a crossing keeper or signalman. If there was no signal box nearby, often a cabin was provided next to the crossing, sometimes with a cottage.
